Not everyone with head lice shows symptoms, and infestations can escalate quickly. Our Approach to Head Lice Treatment
We provide a structured, methodical approach that uses current research and is always supported by clinical evidence. We focus on:
-
Accurate identification of lice , nymphs and eggs. Differentiating between previous and current infestations.
-
Utilising an effective treatment regimen. Our recommended treatment is TGA approved and has clinical evidence (Burgess 2011) to back its high efficacy against the adult nymph and egg stage.
-
Thorough mechanical removal of all stages of the lice lifecycle (conditioning and combing)
-
Advice on appropriate treatment options for future use
-
Clear follow-up guidance to reduce reinfestation
We do not rely on a single “quick fix” solution. While once and done can be effective, our experience is that there is no single treatment, including the "heat treatment" that is 100% effective 100% of the time. Instead, we provide an effective treatment protocol, evidence-informed advice, and practical strategies that will result in the highest possible success of elimination.

Some useful things to know:
About Head Lice
About Lice Treatment
About Prevention

-
Adult head lice are about 3mm long
-
New eggs are laid close to the scalp and firmly cemented to the hair
-
It can take up to 10 days for eggs to hatch into the nymph stage <1mm
-
Eggs (nits) further than 1 cm from scalp are almost certainly hatched or dead.
-
Chances of catching head lice from anything apart from another head are low
-
Some OTC treatments available in Australia have published evidence that they are effective at killing the adult and nymph stages
-
Eggs are more difficult to kill, so a second treatment should be timed for when all eggs are hatched
-
The dead or hatched eggs can only be removed using a fined toothed comb

-
Prevention sprays have not been clinically proven.
-
Tying, gelling, applying wax or hairspray to hair, limits it touching others hair, and prevents transmission
-
Informing contacts of potential transmission allows timeous screening and treatment, and prevents reinfestation
-
Excessive washing, cleaning of items is unnecessary
Frequently asked Questions - Ryde
How quickly can you attend a booking in Ryde?
As we are based nearby in Hunters Hill, Ryde is well within our regular service area. Availability varies, so we recommend booking early where possible.
Do I need to keep my child home from school?
Policies vary by school and child care centre, but generally children can return once treatment has commenced. Current advice for Public schools from NSW dept. Ed. and NSW Health states that children who have head lice should still be sent to school.
Do treatments always work the first time?
It is our experience that no single head lice treatment available in Australia is universally effective. When using an OTC treatment we recommend that a follow-up should always be applied and timed according to the head lice life-cycle. In general, initial treatments primarily targets adults and nymphs, with varying effects on eggs. The follow-up should occur after any remaining eggs hatch, but before the new lice reach adulthood. At Lousy Solutions, our treatment is clinically proven to penetrate the egg stage but there is always a small risk that an egg is missed. So, to be certain of elimination, a self-administered follow-up is highly recommended.
